Antiques and Flea Markets in Bangkok

Bangkok's antique trade runs at two speeds. At the top there are air-conditioned dealer floors selling Khmer bronzes and Burmese lacquer with provenance paperwork; at the bottom, a tarpaulin on the pavement at Khlong Thom covered in 1970s transistor radios, brass taps and single shoes. The interesting material sits between the two: enamel shop signage, old Thai film posters, teak carpenter's tools, Bencharong-style ceramics of thoroughly uncertain age. Dates and provenance are rarely documented, so treat every stated age as a suggestion and buy the things you actually want to look at.
Where to look
Chatuchak Weekend Market is the obvious start: sections 1 and 26 carry most of the antiques, ceramics and old statuary, and both are far more pleasant before about ten in the morning. River City Bangkok, beside Si Phraya pier, is the formal end of the trade, with several floors of dealers and a saleroom that runs periodic auctions of Southeast Asian art. Charoen Krung and the Bang Rak shophouses hide small independents worth a slow walk, and the lanes of Talat Noi are stacked with salvaged marine and car parts that have become photogenic in their own right.
How to buy well
Bargaining is expected but low-key. A friendly opening offer around two-thirds of the asking price usually lands somewhere reasonable, and walking away works far better than arguing. Ask directly whether a piece is old or made to look old, since many sellers will tell you straight. Two practical warnings: genuine antique Buddha images and Buddha heads generally cannot leave Thailand without a Fine Arts Department permit, and anything ivory is best left alone entirely. The larger dealers arrange shipping without fuss; for market finds, budget instead for a sturdier suitcase and some bubble wrap.
