The cheapest good hour in Bangkok is probably the cross-river ferry at Tha Tien: a few baht, four minutes, and the whole Thonburi bank swinging past with Wat Arun's spire lining up behind the boats. A great deal of the city's best material costs nothing. Public parks that fill with runners at dusk, a free contemporary art centre in the middle of the shopping district, riverside promenades, street-art lanes in the old Chinese quarter, and skywalks that put the office towers at eye level without an observation-deck ticket.
Parks and green space
Lumphini Park is the classic, with jogging loops, mass outdoor aerobics around six in the evening and monitor lizards on the lake banks that reliably startle first-timers. Benjakitti Forest Park next door was rebuilt around a wetland with elevated timber walkways and now links to Lumphini by a skybridge, making a comfortable hour's circuit from MRT Queen Sirikit. Rot Fai Park north of Chatuchak has the widest, flattest loops for cycling. Across the river, Bang Krachao costs nothing to walk, though bicycle hire is not free and is worth the small outlay.
Art, streets and views
The Bangkok Art and Culture Centre at Siam is free to enter, with a spiral of galleries stacked around an atrium plus bookshops and cafes on the upper floors. Talat Noi, between Chinatown and the river, is a walkable grid of engine-part workshops, murals and old shophouses that takes an easy hour. The Charoen Krung creative district around Warehouse 30 and the Grand Postal Building rewards a slow wander. For height without a ticket, the elevated walkway at BTS Chong Nonsi gives a clean view up the Sathorn office canyon, best near sunset.
