Thai massage is not a gentle oil rub. An hour of nuad Thai is closer to being folded: thumbs walking the sen lines, forearms into the hamstrings, then a sequence of assisted stretches that ends with something in your spine cracking. You stay clothed, or change into the loose cotton set handed to you, and you lie on a floor mat rather than a table. UNESCO added the practice to its intangible heritage list in 2019, and the school at Wat Pho, beside the reclining Buddha hall, is still where a large share of Thailand's therapists qualified.

Where to book

Wat Pho's massage pavilion inside the temple grounds gives you the source version, brisk and busy, with the school on Sanam Chai Road offering longer sessions. For dependable mid-range work, Health Land has large branches at Asoke, Sathorn and Ekkamai, Let's Relax sits in most malls, and Divana's Sukhumvit houses lean more towards spa treatments. Perception Blind Massage in Sathorn employs visually impaired therapists and is unusually good on pressure and diagnosis. The high end clusters on the river: the Oriental Spa in its teak house opposite the Mandarin Oriental, the Peninsula Spa and Banyan Tree. Evening slots go first, so call in the morning.

How to get a good one

Say what you want before it starts — "bao bao" for lighter, "raeng raeng" for stronger — and flag injuries, pregnancy or recent surgery, because the stretches are not negotiable once you are in them. A neighbourhood shophouse hour typically costs a small fraction of a hotel spa's, and the difference is usually setting rather than skill, though the cheapest street-front chairs vary widely. Foot massage at 45 to 60 minutes is the easy first booking. A herbal compress, luk pra kob, is a bundle of steamed lemongrass, kaffir lime and camphor pressed into the shoulders and worth the small surcharge. Avoid booking straight after a large meal. A cash tip handed to the therapist is customary.
