Travel Etiquette and Customs in Bangkok

At eight in the morning and six in the evening the national anthem plays over loudspeakers in BTS stations, parks and government compounds, and everyone stops walking until it ends. Standing still for that minute is the easiest good manners a visitor can manage here. Thai social life runs on a light touch — keeping jai yen, a cool heart, counts for more than any specific rule — and most of the etiquette follows from two simple ideas: the head is the highest part of a person, and the feet are the lowest.
The basics
The wai, palms together with a slight bow, is a greeting with social rank built into it. Returning one is polite, but you are not expected to wai shop staff, waiters or children — a smile and a nod is correct and looks less awkward. Do not touch anyone's head, do not point your feet at people, images or food, and take your shoes off wherever you see them lined up at a door. Raising your voice in a dispute loses you the argument socially, however right you are. Dress codes at the Grand Palace and the larger temple compounds — covered shoulders and knees, nothing sheer — are enforced at the gate, not politely overlooked.
Day to day
Tipping is not obligatory. Rounding up a taxi fare and leaving small notes for massage therapists and hotel staff is normal, and mid-range restaurants often add a service charge already. Queue properly and let passengers off first — Bangkok is disciplined about this — and do not eat or drink on the BTS or MRT. The monarchy is treated with genuine seriousness and public criticism carries real legal risk, so keep the tone respectful. E-cigarettes and vaping devices remain illegal to bring into Thailand. Cannabis rules have changed repeatedly since 2022, so check the current position rather than assuming what you read last year still holds.
